RIADIS Statement on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Latin America,  December 3th  2013 –

Today , the International day of the people with Disabilities, RIADIS- the
Latin American Network of Non-Governmental Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and their Families,  join the global movement in one voice , to increase the conciseness and comprehension of the Rights of the persons with Disabilities, to end the exclusion and discrimination, and to remind us:

-       The World Report on Disability published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, there are an estimated one billion persons with disabilities worldwide, with more than 80% of persons with Disabilities that leave in developing countries and that belong to Latin American and Caribbean region.

-       That persons with Disabilities were not consider in the MDG, but thanks to RIADIS and IDA advocacy work and other movements convinced of the full and effective participation of persons with disabilities and their families are expected rights of individuals are promoted disabilities in the next Millennium Sustainable Development will shape the post 2015 agenda;

-       That poverty denies people with disabilities the full enjoyment of their basic human rights and fundamental freedoms, which is manifested not only in the lack of economic resources, but also in the lack of availability of public services and in many cases there they are inaccessible and not inclusive, showing attitudes of discrimination that puts people with disabilities in a state of disadvantage for development.

-       That the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)  and its Optional Protocol, has been signed and ratified by almost all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, but not yet signed commitments are reflected in enforcement actions effective progressive by most of the states that ratified the treaty;

For a society respectful of human diversity as an attribute of human nature, for inclusive and sustainable development where no missing because each and all are needed in our flag of social justice and citizen participation a reality: "Nothing about us without us ".
